  • This handout is designed to give you an overview of some of the internal parasites that can infect your cat. For more detailed information, refer to our separate handouts on roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, tapeworms, and heartworms.

  • Counterconditioning and desensitization are powerful ways to change behavior. They are usually used in combination. Desensitization provides a means of safely exposing the pet to the stimulus at a level at or below which fear is likely to be exhibited.

  • Itraconazole is an antifungal medication used to treat fungal infections in your pet. There may be other conditions for which your veterinarian may prescribe this medication.

  • Ivermectin is used as an intestinal de-wormer and as a preventative for heartworm. It may also be used to treat various types of mites.

  • A joint luxation is a dislocation or complete separation between the bone ends that normally articulate to form a joint. Subluxation is the term referring to a partial separation of the joint. The most commonly subluxated joint in cats is the hip, although any joint can be affected.

  • Kaolin and pectin are used to treat diarrhea. They may also be used to relieve the symptoms of an upset stomach and nausea. Occasionally this medication may be used as an adsorbent (a substance to minimize absorption) if the pet has ingested certain toxins.

  • Keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS) is a condition that is also commonly referred to as dry eye. The medical term means inflammation of the cornea and surrounding tissues from drying. It is a common eye condition resulting from inadequate production of the aqueous portion of the tear film by the lacrimal gland and/or the third eyelid gland. In chronic cases, there may be a history of eye injury, ulcers, or conjunctivitis.

  • Ketoconazole is an antifungal medication used to treat fungal infections in your pet. Your veterinarian may prescribe this medication for other conditions, such as Cushing’s disease in dogs. It may also be prescribed with cyclosporin to decrease the elimination of cyclosporin.

  • Ketoprofen is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication used to reduce pain caused by inflammation. It may also be used to decrease fever.

  • Ketorolac is a topical preparation used to stop inflammation in the eye.
