  • Does your home double as a drug store? Do you have medications stashed in the bathroom cabinet, kitchen drawer and pantry shelf? Are random bottles haphazardly tossed into the “pharmacy”?Here are a few tips to help you safely handle your household medicine inventory.

  • Sago Palms are pretty plants but beware—they pack a deadly punch for pets. The popular Sago Palm enhances outdoor landscapes in warmer areas of the U.S. and serves as indoor decor in many colder climates. All parts of the Sago Palm are poisonous, but the seeds (nuts) are the most toxic to pets.

  • Salivary cancers are almost invariably malignant tumors originating from the secretory cells of the glands. Other swellings or tumors of salivary glands may be due to infections and cysts.

  • SAMe (S-adenosylmethionine) is the bioactive form of methionine, an essential amino acid (building block of protein) abundant in foods, but especially concentrated in meat and sunflower seeds. Supplementation with methionine alone, however, does not necessarily markedly raise the level of bioactive methionine, or SAMe.

  • Seborrhea or seborrheic dermatitis is a skin disorder in which the sebaceous glands of the skin produce an excessive amount of sebum. Seborrhea typically affects the back, face and flanks causing scaly, flaky, itchy, red skin. There are two types of seborrhea, called seborrhea sicca meaning dry seborrhea, and seborrhea oleosa (oily seborrhea).

  • A seizure, also known as a convulsion or fit, is a temporary involuntary disturbance of normal brain function that is usually accompanied by uncontrollable muscle activity. Epilepsy is used to describe repeated episodes of seizures. With epilepsy, the seizures can be single or may occur in clusters, and they can be infrequent and unpredictable or may occur at regular intervals.

  • Selamectin is a topical agent used to kill parasites in dogs and cats. It is used to kill adult fleas, prevent flea eggs from hatching, prevent and control flea infestations, prevent heartworm disease and treat and control ear mite infestations in dogs and cats. This product may also be prescribed by your veterinarian for the treatment and control of sarcoptic mange, control of tick infestations in dogs and the treatment of intestinal hookworm and roundworm infections in cats.

  • Improved nutrition, prevention of infectious disease and advances in veterinary medical care have resulted in our cats living longer and healthier lives. In the last decade in North America, there has been a 15% increase in the number of cats over ten years of age and the proportion of the feline population aged fifteen years or older has increased from 5% to 14%.

  • Septic arthritis occurs when bacteria or another infectious agent is introduced into one (or more) joints, leading to painful inflammation.

  • ACTH (adrenocorticotropic hormone) is a hormone produced by the pituitary gland. The term endogenous simply refers to the ACTH that is produced by the animal itself (as opposed to synthetic ACTH, which is used for diagnostic testing purposes).
